The Interview - Sarah D
https://medium.com/@sarahbiblionHow did you become an author and get published? Share your experience.
Well, I always nurtured dreams of being an author until someone informed me about something known as self-publishing. I looked it up online and found a few websites related to the same. I decided on The Pencil app and spent hours late at night writing this romance novella. I did not know it would be received this well, after all, it is my first book.
Which character do you enjoy writing the most as a writer and why? If choosing a favorite character is like choosing a favorite child, which character do you find requires the most attention and detail from you as a writer?
Well, I have written mostly about young women in love relationships with an its complicated feel. In 'His Lingering Perfume' the main character Jenna is based a little on my younger days, and a little on Jennifer Garner in 13 going on 30. I love writing about female characters because there is so much to write about in terms of beauty, grace, and all the finer qualities. Its harder to write about men I do feel. I like Jenna because she is a typical young female introvert who is a tomboy but seeks love in only one special person despite being rich and doing otherwise.
Can you explain your writing process? Do you prefer to create an outline and plan beforehand, or do you prefer to write more spontaneously and organically?
Spontaneity in writing is more my thing...I feel like I can never live up to my content outlines ever.
What are some books or authors that you would recommend to our readers?
A book I read recently that I liked was 'The Secret' by Rhonda Byrne, and 'The monk who sold his Ferrari' . Both these books inspired some awe in me, and also helped me write my book
Tell us what you enjoy most about writing [genre].
I love writing short stories that have some sort of Moral on my blog on Medium. I also like adding some romance partly because its what people want to read, and also because it gives a story so much more depth.
Describe the [book/series] in 10 words or less for people who are just learning about it.
A story of a shy girl who is quite relatable
Would you like readers to have any specific takeaway from your book?
The book is based on the "its complicated" status that many young people use to label their relationships. The protagonist and her lover are quite close but will they ever marry? Read the book to find out. The book teaches people that love is a beautiful thing, and even the awkward shy types can find it.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I tend to write without using a draft or any sort of planning
Share some advice for aspiring authors. What advice would you give to your younger self?1. What is your favorite line from your book?
A favourite line from my book is " I have never been in love with other guys, I told you that since you are my best friend"
Have you ever experienced writer’s block? How did you deal with it?
Well, I do sometimes experience writer's block, and when that happens I will usually have a light snack or go for a walk. Sometimes calming music soothes me, and gives me inspiration to write better
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
When I am not writing, I am practising my singing. I believe that if I work on it, I could join a Choir, or perhaps even sing solo at Church Meetings. I feel like I have a natural talent for singing and could make the best of it if I practised regularly. I also like reading motivational, self-help, and Christian books. They make me a better writer!
Was there anything you had to research for the book?
Well, I did read a lot of Chick Lit to prepare myself while writing this book. The book was inspired by an old movie I watched when I was younger entitled '13 Going on 30' and the character whose name is only revealed later is called Jenna just like Jennifer Garner's character in the same movie. Some people tell me the book's intro is a lot like classical literature such as Pride and Prejudice or A Midsummer Night's Dream. I did not read any classical literature to inspire me for this book. I also read alot of love stories on Wattpad, and that too was a form of inspiration
Did you have any say in the cover design?
Yes I designed it myself using Canva
What are you reading right now?
A conversation with God for teenagers by Neale Donald Walshe. Its such a lovely book for anyone who is spiritual in any sense of the word. A great read too.
What can we anticipate from you moving forward?
Another book in the 'A Raw Story Of Awkward Love' series
How long did it take you to write this book?
It took me a month. I was part of Geetika Saigal's 5-day author workshop. It taught me a thing or two about writing a good book
Where do you like to write? In a coffee shop? In your home office? On the beach?
I prefer writing in my room with my laptop. There is also this cafe that has quaint and peaceful vibes. I do write there too.
Do you have any personal connection to the story or characters?
Yes the male character is based on my Childhood sweetheart
