The Interview - Zoe Michal

How did you become an author and get published? Share your experience.
I originally submitted my work to publishing houses, would garner interest, then nothing. I realized that most the books they publish are "stars" that already had an audience, so I started my publishing company (an LLC).
When you're working on a book and a new idea pops up, should you pursue it immediately (also known as 'UP syndrome') or finish your current project first? What do you think is the best course of action?
Well, personally, I like to work on one book at a time so it gets all my attention. If something pops in my head, which it always does, I write it down and look at it later.
Tell us what you enjoy most about writing [genre].
I love writing children's books for young children to feel love and confident - with a little humor. There's enough negativity in the world. Let them enjoy childhood.
Have you ever experienced writer’s block? How did you deal with it?
Never (I'm lucky) - Ideas pop in my head all the time.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I work full time, play with my little love, my dog, Penelope. Hang out with the husband and my young adult children - when they let me.
Was there anything you had to research for the book?
Yes, for my Baby Love series (All Mommies Love Their Babies, All Daddies Love Their Babies, All Grandparents Love Their Babies), I had to research different animals, their special features and actions. I actually learned a lot. Did you know that sloths only poo once a week?
Do you have any movie or tv adaptations in the works?
No, but I'd love to have a cartoon made from one of my books.
Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what kind of music do you like to listen to?
I usually listen to ambient music when I write. I find that when I listen to music with words....it's conflicting in my mind.
