The Interview - S. J. Barratt

When you're working on a book and a new idea pops up, should you pursue it immediately (also known as 'UP syndrome') or finish your current project first? What do you think is the best course of action?

Yes, I participate in many writing competitions that come my way.  I find it useful to think about something else for a few days - even a week - and research, write, edit and finetune a piece of writing about a completely different topic.  When I come back to my manuscript I feel fulfilled and pleased that I have achieved a little story which can range from 200 to 4,000 words. My last exercise was about Avocado the penguin and Stinky flowers!!

Have you ever experienced writer’s block? How did you deal with it?

No I haven't because when I write I know it is important to put words on paper. I don't judge I just get the scene or chapter done. Then every time I come to that scene or Chapter, it is time to edit, until I feel I can't improve it any more.. Then it is time for professional editors....   Only when I have gone through development editing and line editing, do I share with beta readers....

Was there anything you had to research for the book?

Yes! Everything. I spent months reading about Shetland, Scotland, crofting and the island of Foula which is the inspiration for the imaginary island called Papala in my books.

Did you have any say in the cover design?

Yes. I have a wonderful illustrator Jenny Nutbourne based in Scotland, who has worked on my first and second book. Each time I have started the idea and she then takes the idea and makes it real.

Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what kind of music do you like to listen to?

No I don't. I love music and envy many writers who do this as I often see created playlists on author websites.. I wish I could listen to music, but I need relative silence to write. I love to write outside or at least with the door open, listening to nature and the birds chirping ... but unfortunately mosquitos love me and I end up covered in bites!
