The Interview - Lynda Rees, The Murder Guru
https://www.lyndareesauthor.comCan you tell us a little about your background and why you wrote your non-fiction book, It’s YOUR Business?
As you know, I mostly write mystery, though I've published historical and contemporary romance, middle-grade and children's books, along with non-fiction. I wrote It's YOUR Business because I saw the need and have the expertise to provide help.
After 36 years in finance, marketing, and global transportation, I’ve learned a few things about business that transition well to managing my writing career. Most authors are creative and want to focus only on writing. Once their book is completed, they may not realize they’re now in business for themselves. This is true regardless which path to publishing a writer takes. It’s time to take off the creative hat and put on the CEO hat. You are now in charge of your company, your brand, and your products.
My workshop has been presented to many author groups across the US. I found there’s way too much information authors need that can't be covered enough in an hour and a half. So, It’s YOUR Business for authors and creative business owners was born.

You also recently launched two new romantic mysteries. Can you tell us a bit about Flip or Flop, Murder House and what inspired the story?
Absolutely! Thanks for asking. This book came out in June, 2023 and won the Killer Nashville, Silver Falcion Reader's Choice Award.
My husband was a builder, and I sold residential real estate in KY, OH. and IN for 36 years. We’ve done a lot of real estate investment, renovation, and toured many homes. It’s surprising what you find once you get into the guts of a house. I wanted to explore that subject, so Charli Owens, a professional female rehabber came to life. Of course, Charli needed a juicy mystery to solve and a sexy fella to join her. Here’s a bit about the story.
FLIP OR FLOP, MURDER HOUSE

Charli Owens’ murder house renovation should save her from ruin—if it doesn’t kill her first. She’s determined to bring the scene of a double homicide to its former glory, sell it and restore her financial wellbeing. More than corpses pile up as unexplainable mishaps put her life in danger, forcing Charli and contractor, Eli Lange, to unravel a history of corruption and deceit.

Your romantic mystery, Fresh Starts, Dirty Money came out just two months after Flip or Flop, Murder House. What was your inspiration?
When I was young, my father, in search of work, moved our family away from everyone and everything we knew. This drastic experience for a child made me realize how brave he was to set out for the unknown and make a better life. It prompted me t write about a woman moving from a similar location to where we lived, to a totally different environment and lifestyle. Bree Collins was born to do this relocation with me, and hopefully with you. Of course, there must be a murder mystery to solve, red herrings, twists, and turns. We can't forget the handsome but snarky police chief.
FRESH STARTS, DIRTY MONEY
by Multi-Award-Winning Author Lynda Rees, The Murder Guru
With a fresh MBA and fabulous job, Bree leaves her cheating husband and backwoods home for the big city. Snarky Police Chief Rex takes his tragic morning out on her when Bree’s vehicle blocks rush hour traffic. A theft brings the two together, but their budding romance is interrupted when Bree is suspected in a brutal slaying. She sets out for New York City to solve the murder and becomes involved in two intriguing crimes, and her sleuthing makes her a target. Get yours at this LINK: https://bit.ly/413BEaY
You have published quite a few books over many years. Is there a common thread in them?
I write about strong women who have no idea how powerful they are until they are tested. These gals choose lovers who appreciate those qualities in them.
I am an avid American history buff and often wonder when reading about historical events, what happened afterward. I was born in the Appalachian Mountains in Eastern Kentucky and transported to Northern Kentucky as a child. There, I grew up alongside children of gangsters during a time when the Cleveland Mob ruled the area.
The rich and famous came to Newport, Kentucky to entertain or be entertained—Vegas before Vegas was conceived (1920s through 1978). Gambling and sin were out in the open. Police looked the other way. A strip joint occupied every corner, and there were several in between. It was a prosperous and dangerous time until the Kennedys pushed the FBI to shut down illegal mob related activity in the Top Five Cities—Newport one of them.
Curiosity about what happened next to all those people—those who survive. Those who did or didn’t go to prison, weren’t shot dead in the streets, pushed out of windows to their deaths, or simply disappeared. How did all this affect the next generation and the next? Many, many crimes were never prosecuted and still today remain mysteries. All this inspires my writing. Some of it is weaved into the stories, though my books are completely fictional—a fabric of my imagination to tell how it might’ve happened.
How do you choose your settings?
I have traveled the world, met and worked with many cultures, and been to lots of exotic locations. I write about areas I know and love. I adore my lifestyle in a small horse farm community in Northern Kentucky. I write smalltown mysteries set in rural areas, mostly Kentucky horse country.
What genre books do you write and where can they be purchased?
My books are mysteries with suspense, a dab of history and a dash of romance. I've also published Middle-Grade, Children's Picture Books, Children's Learning
