What inspired you to write Roadmap to Non-Executive Directorship?

I have spent years working closely with boards and executives across industries and continents. A recurring challenge I observed was that many talented professionals aspire to join corporate boards but lack clear guidance on how to transition into those roles. I wanted to create a practical, step-by-step handbook that demystifies the journey to becoming a Non-Executive Director (NED) and empowers professionals to confidently take their first seat at the board table.

What is the single biggest misconception professionals have about becoming a Non-Executive Director?

Many believe that technical expertise or seniority alone is enough to secure a board seat. While those are important, boards today prioritize strategic thinkers who can influence without managing day-to-day operations. Your ability to ask the right questions, foresee risks, and challenge management constructively is what sets you apart.

Your career spans engineering, project management, and corporate governance. How has this shaped your perspective as an author?

My journey from civil engineering to becoming a Certified Director® (Cert.Dir) and Project Management Professional® (PMP) has given me a unique lens on leadership. I understand both the operational and strategic layers of organizations. This book blends that technical rigor with governance insights, making it equally valuable to executives, entrepreneurs, and professionals looking to pivot into board leadership.

You talk about rejection and resilience in the book. Why is this so important?

Board appointments are competitive. Rejections are not a reflection of your worth but often of timing or fit. I wanted to normalize that reality and equip readers with tools to bounce back, refine their approach, and keep building the network and confidence needed to secure the right opportunity.

What role does networking play in landing a board role?

Networking is everything. Board appointments are rarely advertised. Most opportunities come through referrals and reputation. In Roadmap to Non-Executive Directorship, I share strategies to build and nurture a network that actively supports your board aspirations, without feeling transactional or forced.

What is your favorite chapter in the book and why?

Chapter 5, which focuses on Board Interviews and Influence. It unpacks how to prepare for a board interview, anticipate tough questions, and demonstrate your ability to think strategically. This chapter resonates with me because it turns nervous professionals into confident, board-ready candidates.

Who should read this book?

If you have ever thought, “I want to influence organizations at a strategic level,” this book is for you. It’s designed for aspiring directors, senior executives preparing for their first board seat, entrepreneurs seeking to understand governance, and even current NEDs who want to sharpen their impact.

How do you see the future of corporate boards evolving?

Boards are shifting from traditional oversight roles to becoming active drivers of ethical leadership, sustainability, and innovation. Directors will need not just financial literacy, but also digital fluency, ESG awareness, and the ability to navigate complex global risks. Those who can anticipate and adapt will thrive.
