The Interview - Iulia C. Bocaneala
https://iuliabocanealaauthor.wixsite.com/booksTell us what you enjoy most about writing [genre].
What I enjoy most about writing fiction is the freedom to create entire worlds and the ability to explore the depths of human experience through the characters and stories I invent. Writing fiction allows me to delve into the complexities of emotions, relationships, and the human condition, offering a unique way to process and express ideas and feelings. Additionally, I love the sense of discovery that comes with writing fiction—the way characters can take on lives of their own and plotlines can evolve in unexpected directions. The creative process is both challenging and exhilarating, providing a constant source of inspiration and satisfaction.
What have you found to be most challenging about writing in [genre]?
The most challenging aspect of writing fiction for me is maintaining consistency in characters and plot while keeping the story engaging. Developing well-rounded, believable characters that grow and evolve can be difficult, especially when balancing their actions and dialogue with the overarching narrative. Additionally, ensuring that the plot remains coherent and free of holes requires meticulous planning and attention to detail. Avoiding clichés and finding original ways to tell a story also presents a significant challenge, as does staying motivated and overcoming writer’s block during the writing process.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes, I have a few unusual writing habits. One of them is that I like to write in short, intense bursts, often using a timer to limit myself to 20-30 minute sessions. This helps me maintain focus and keep my writing energetic. Another quirky habit is that I often write the ending of a story first. Knowing how the story concludes gives me a clear direction and helps me craft a more cohesive narrative. Additionally, I prefer writing late at night when it’s quiet and there are fewer distractions, which allows me to fully immerse myself in the fictional worlds I create.
As an author, what critique has been the most challenging for you to receive? On the other hand, what compliment has been the most rewarding?
As an author, the most challenging critique for me to receive has been when readers say they couldn’t connect with my characters. Since character development is such a crucial part of storytelling and something I deeply care about, it’s difficult to hear that my characters didn’t resonate or feel authentic. This type of feedback pushes me to dig deeper into character motivations and backgrounds to create more relatable and engaging personalities.
On the other hand, the most rewarding compliment I've received is when readers tell me that my story moved them emotionally or provided them with a new perspective on life. Knowing that my writing has touched someone deeply or helped them see the world in a different light is incredibly fulfilling and reminds me why I write in the first place.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
When I'm not writing, I enjoy a range of activities that help me relax and stay inspired. I love spending time outdoors, whether it's hiking, gardening, or simply taking long walks. Reading is another favorite pastime, as it not only entertains me but also fuels my creativity. I also enjoy cooking and experimenting with new recipes, finding it both a creative outlet and a way to unwind. Additionally, I like to engage in photography, capturing interesting moments and scenes, which often provide visual inspiration for my writing. Lastly, I value spending quality time with friends and family, sharing experiences and making memories together.
What can we anticipate from you moving forward?
Moving forward, you can anticipate more diverse and ambitious storytelling from me. I'm working on a new series that blends genres, incorporating elements of fantasy, mystery, and psychological drama. Additionally, I'm exploring shorter works, such as novellas and short stories, to experiment with different narrative styles and voices. I'm also planning to engage more with readers through blogs and social media, sharing insights into my writing process and behind-the-scenes looks at upcoming projects. Ultimately, you can expect stories that continue to delve into complex characters and thought-provoking themes, pushing the boundaries of my creative abilities.
What other hobbies do you have outside of writing?
Outside of writing, I enjoy a variety of hobbies that help keep me inspired and balanced. I love reading across different genres, which not only entertains me but also broadens my perspective and informs my writing. I also enjoy hiking and spending time in nature, as it provides a refreshing escape and often sparks new ideas. Additionally, I have a passion for photography, which allows me to capture moments and explore visual storytelling. Cooking is another hobby I find rewarding, as it combines creativity with the joy of sharing meals with friends and family.
