Have you been able to incorporate your previous experience in [jobs/education] in your writing?

Yes, in the book are the many stories of overcoming life barriers, and difficulties of my family and I.

Do you identify with your main character or did you create a character that is your opposite?

I am one of the main characters. This book is about true accounts of a family trapped inside a communist dictatorship, our fight against the regime, our desperate escape from it, and my rebirth as an American Submariner in the US Navy Nuclear Submarine Force.

Describe the [book/series] in 10 words or less for people who are just learning about it.

True stories of a family battling historical times, and struggling to improve their lives.

Would you like readers to have any specific takeaway from your book?

I would like for Americans to be aware of how lucky we are to be living in this great nation. People like me who escaped a communist dictatorship on an overloaded boat full of vomiting refugees (like I narrated in my book) have been able to restart my life, and have reached a very comfortable life. I am an example of what is possible if you make the right life choices in this nation.

Are any of the characters in your book based on people in your real life? If so, can you tell us more about that process and how it influenced your writing?

Yes, my book is the story of my family, of the great women and men who came before me like my parents who endure terrible times inside a communist tyranny. My father who for example was a CIA spy inside communist Cuba, and was instrumental in the flow of information to the United States about what was going on inside that island during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. There is also the amazing stories of my maternal grandfather who died a hero, and then you have my story, arriving here in the Unites States as a teen with nothing, and just less than a decade later I was at the helm of a ballistic nuclear missiles submarine of the US Navy.
