The Interview - Wallace Briggs

What are some books or authors that you would recommend to our readers?
I have no hesitation in recommending the works of Wilbur Smith. His first masterpience 'When the Lion Feeds' sets the scene for many of his books that follow. And when you've finished gorging on Wilbur, start on the lee Cild's Jack Reacher series.
Have you been able to incorporate your previous experience in [jobs/education] in your writing?
My career was based on my scientific qualifications gained while a chemistry Technician at Durham University. Sales of advanced technical instrumentation covered almost every aspect of science, as did my interests. For example High Voltage Electrophoresis equipment required me to study field other than chemistry, like life sciences. those experiences helped me to intoduce realistic ScFi into my works.
As an author, what critique has been the most challenging for you to receive? On the other hand, what compliment has been the most rewarding?
One critique in a publishe review criticised what he thought was a mistake in the plot, whereas one paragraph later the deviation was explained as part of the story.
In one review of one my Jimmy Crikey Adventures a mother explained how she had to stop her son from reading into the ealr hours of the morning, under the bedsheets with a torch. She wanted to know what had grabbed his attention so read it herself in a single sitting, with hreat relish.
Have you ever experienced writer’s block? How did you deal with it?
There cannot be a writer in all history who never hit the proverbial brick wall. I follow the advice I was given many years ago: put the work to one side and do something else, until the ideas begin to flow again, be that in one hour, one day, one week or even more. And don't berate yourself. The inspiration will return. Be patient.
What are you reading right now?
A James Patterson, the title of which escapes me. as I devote time to helping my disabled wife recuperate after a series of falls and a spell in hospital.
What other hobbies do you have outside of writing?
I was taught piano at pre-ten years of age and at twelve was able to play sophisticated pieces which , now aged eighty two, I will never be able to reproduce again. My current instrument of choice is my electronic Hammond organ equipped with a rotating Leslie speaker, almost the same size as the organ.
Secondly and more frequently, I paint fantasy scenes onto china plates and fire them in my kiln, which was bequeathed to me by my old teacher in the specialist art techniques.
