Author Interview - KL Burnham
www.amazon.com/author/klburnhamWhich character do you enjoy writing the most as a writer and why? If choosing a favorite character is like choosing a favorite child, which character do you find requires the most attention and detail from you as a writer?
The main character for sure. In UNDYING VENGEANCE, I enjoyed writing about Victor the vampire the most. He has my heart.
Can you explain your writing process? Do you prefer to create an outline and plan beforehand, or do you prefer to write more spontaneously and organically?
I come up with an idea/plot and a few characters and I just roll with it.
What are some books or authors that you would recommend to our readers?
Of course I'll recommend mine. (ha-ha). UNDYING VENGEANCE, by KL Burnham. THE DROWNING WOMAN, by Robyn Harding. THE PRISONER by B.A. Paris. THE QUIET TENANT by Clemence Michallon. THE ONLY ONE LEFT by Riley Sager. ALL THAT IS MINE I CARRY WITH ME, by William Landay.
Tell us what you enjoy most about writing [genre].
I love creating a world all my own. It's a stress relief to be able to escape into this place, this creation, your writing.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not really unusual. Coffee, music and a candle burning.
As an author, what critique has been the most challenging for you to receive? On the other hand, what compliment has been the most rewarding?
I've had great reviews and good reviews, which of course make you feel wonderful about your writing skills. I've also had a few negative reviews, which some say means that your book is officially good/a seller. Not every book is for everyone. For example, I love Stephen King and most of his books are awesome, but I've also read a few that I think are not that great. That's just life.
Share some advice for aspiring authors. What advice would you give to your younger self?1. What is your favorite line from your book?
Never. Give. Up. I'm still striving to be a New York Times Bestselling Author. Will I get there? I don't know, but I sure hope so. Honestly, I can't think of just one line, there's many that I love.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
I like to read. Gardening/Flowers. Hiking. Exploring nature.
Was there anything you had to research for the book?
Oh yes! A lot!! UNDYING VENGEANCE required much research to get some details accurate. I learn as I write.
What are you reading right now?
I'm currently reading AFTER THAT NIGHT, by Karin Slaughter.
What can we anticipate from you moving forward?
My next novel is titled, DOLPHIN QUEST. It's about a teen who gets kidnapped and is going to be sold into slavery. She's held prisoner on a ship with other girls in the same predicament. I don't want to give too much away, but basically they have to strategize an escape with the help of a pod of dolphins.
Do you have any movie or tv adaptations in the works?
No. But I have a book I'm working on that I think would be perfect for TV.
Did you always want to be an author? If not, what did you want to be when you grew up?
No, not always. I've been an avid reader since I was young, and I've always loved to create things, whether it be drawing or writing. My imagination knew no bounds. But I had my heart set on becoming a marine biologist, with a special love for dolphins.
How long did it take you to write this book?
Quite a long time, actually. A couple years. It's not something that you just whip out, although I wish it were that easy. It takes time to write the first draft, then you have the edits and rewrites, (which is a grueling task). And those can take much longer than you anticipate. Also, I work full time so I was writing when I had days off and free time. I hope to be able to write full time someday. Then I think I could write about 3 books a year.
Where do you like to write? In a coffee shop? In your home office? On the beach?
I write in my bedroom. I have a little area where I have my desk, computer, and all of my writing tools. I'd get too distracted to write at a coffee shop. Plus, I feel writing is a private thing. As Stephen King says, "Write with the door closed. Rewrite with the door open."
Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what kind of music do you like to listen to?
Yes! Of course! It's the only way I can write. I listen to a variety of music, but mostly bands like Breaking Benjamin, Evanescence, Shinedown. It really depends on my mood and what I'm writing.
Are any of the characters in your book based on people in your real life? If so, can you tell us more about that process and how it influenced your writing?
No. They're all from my imagination. Some of them just appear and introduce themselves to me while I'm writing and there they are added to the story.
Do you have any personal connection to the story or characters?
I think everyone can relate to some of my characters on some level. We all deal with loss and it's up to us how we respond to it.
